From wrestling below ramen restaurants in Tokyo, to being booked in Somewheresville, America, Naty Zenigata was in for an interesting ride. The one thing going for her is that she has lived in the United States long enough to get acclimated, bypassing culture shock.
Still, like a mullet donned by many Americans, she is business upfront and a party out back.
Now on her own, she is set to do everything in her power to promote Cheap Pops Pro Wrestling! As an unknown talent in the American market, she couldn’t get away with saying, “google me” to inquiring minds. Being tasked with passing out flyers all over town, she decided to visit the most frequented destinations.
Naty first visits a diner downtown. As a courtesy to the owners, she orders breakfast, and is seated near the entrance where she’d be exposed to all the foot traffic. Once her table is cleared, she places a tablet on a stand to showcase the promotion logo, along with a logo for Danny Stevenson’s Chevrolet dealership. A group of construction workers enter the diner, and are greeted by the waitress.
“G’morning, guys. I saw your truck pulling in, so your meals will be out shortly. In the meantime, we have a guest in town who would like to introduce herself to you all.”
The waitress, with the name “Marge” embroidered on her uniform top gestures at Naty who flashes a quick smile before introducing herself.
“Sweetie, I don’t think there’s a whole lot to offer in this town, other than the pancakes,” says the presumed leader of the crew.
“No worries. It’s a matter of what we will do for your entertainment. My name is Naty Zenigata and I am here on behalf of Cheap Pops Pro Wrestling! Rather than to cause speculation, I wanted you to become familiar. Should you have a few hours for leisure, tell your friends and check us out. There is talent for all fan bases, I can assure you that.”
“My sons might be interested in checking you guys out. Are you on YouTube?” he says, taking a seat across from Naty.
Naty positions the tablet so that it’s in view for the men surrounding her. She opens the YouTube app, already on the channel she plays a minute-long clip with highlights of her wrestling in Japan, where she originally embraced the sport. At the end of the video, the information for Carmageddon appears. Their focus returns to the food being served.
“I thank you all for your courtesy and hope that you can make it to Carmageddon,” Naty says, standing up from her seat. She gathers her belongings and distributes flyers to each member of the construction crew. Marge returns to bring full bottles of condiments and takes a flyer from Naty to place on a bulletin board along with the other business cards on display, earning her generous gratuity from Naty.
Naty exits the diner, having more flyers in the backseat to hand out. Her next stops would be the grocery store, post office, and wherever else she could find highly frequented places.
After entering her car, one of the construction workers at the diner approaches the wrestler.
“Listen, before you go...I have to ask: are you out of your damn mind? Your opponent is a beast!”
“I have risked nearly all of it to be here, and now’s not the time to pick and choose my battles. Mr. Mayfair has demonstrated in the past what he’s capable of and he’s not one to take lightly. He knows this and uses it well. Despite his injuries, he poses a threat and I imagine he returns with the same if not more hunger to succeed this time - otherwise, what’s the point? I won’t be the first nor last to navigate the belly of the beast, but it’s necessary and good for business. He will be the first to know why I am the one that got away in Japan along with everyone else. I appreciate your concern and attendance.”
“I uh--”
The window rolls up before the man could finish responding. Naty reverses and peels en route to the next stop. This was more than entertaining a silly thought after a night of drinking. When she sobered up, she was still onboard with Tony’s offer; it just happened to come at the price of a headache and a scolding from her parents upon finding out. She must start somewhere, and decided this would be it.
